One of the ways we are trying find balance in our lives and save money is by staying put in our townhouse. It’s not ideal, but we’re gonna, “Make it Work” as long as we can. A few months ago we were considering renting out our townhome and building ourselves a new home with Kings Court Builders in Plainfield, IL. Upon further consideration we decided that becoming landlords is very unappealing at this time. With small kids, and one income, if for some reason, we could not find a renter we would have less money left over to continue to do the things we love. Talk about stressful.
Our home is very tall and open. Since it’s a townhouse it’s also rather long, but narrow. And because we replaced the carpet on the entry stairs and the main-level with hardwood a couple years ago, sounds travel like crazy. I can hear the TV in the basement all the way upstairs in our master bedroom.
Our “main entry” is in the basement, off the garage. That’s where most people enter our home. And this is what they used to see:
Since that photo was taken we did upgrade it with some paint, toy organization, and a built-in TV and storage stand. We have been using it as a 2nd living room and playroom for the kids. There is a small corner that functions as an office for Bryan when he works from home or works on his hobby/small business. Of course, I can’t find any photos of that project. But since my stepson moved in (July 2012)- we’ve had to deal with his (rather loud) friends, find a space for him to do homework, play his video games, and also a place to store his backpack, coat, shoes, etc.
For this project our priorities were to:
-create an entry space where coats and shoes and backpacks could be hung up and off the floor.
-add a wall with a door to prevent sound-travel.
-make the whole space bright, functional, and pretty (since it’s the first thing people see when they walk in).
I would DIE to have a Mommy command center like this one in the house we were considering building with KCB:
But our space is too small for something so awesome, so I found myself gravitated to this and this:
So! We did it! Well, to be honest, we’re still in the process of doing it:) My mom’s boyfriend, Len, is a very handy dude. So, we asked his advice and he said it would be a piece of cake. So, he came over one Saturday and we made a trip to home depot to pick up our french door, some lumber, and supplies and by 6 pm we had a door, a wall, and the beginnings of our entry space!
FYI- Those photos were taken throughout the past couple of weeks, and today it looks much, much different. BUT- It’s still not completed! I’m hoping to put the finishing touches on it this week, and then post the finished product on Friday! So, stay tuned!
